Yet 50% buy things they never use. These findings come from a Radar survey among 19,000 respondents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the national design consortium <em>Rethink \u2013 Inspiring Ideas for a Circular City<\/em>, four designers and municipalities explored how changing the way we think and act can help reduce the use of raw materials. But the highest steps of the R-ladder \u2013 Refuse and Rethink, or in everyday language: reconsidering what we really need \u2013 are still often overlooked\u2026\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper long\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column\">\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column text\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the large-scale redevelopment of the Wildemanbuurt in Amsterdam New-West, many residents are required to move. Some have limited financial resources or mobility, or lack a strong social network. Moving is also an emotional and stressful experience. Under stress, people automatically choose the easiest option. If repairing, giving away, selling or taking items to a recycle point seems complicated or unfamiliar, unwanted belongings are simply left on the street\u2026\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper long\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column\">\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column text\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, moving is a natural decision-making moment. People are already considering three questions: <strong>What should I take with me? What can go? We spoke with residents and professionals, organised a community dinner and tested ideas in the neighbourhood. What do I need in my new home?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decision-making tools, stickers, checklists, tips and local addresses encourage residents to repair, donate, sell or recycle their belongings. Those who need certain items are introduced to alternatives to buying new, such as buying second-hand, borrowing, renting or leasing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainability Research  &#038; Implementation<\/h2>\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column text\">\r\n\t\t\t\tFollowing an initial exploration of the problem, CHANGENCY and the City of Amsterdam organised a community dinner with residents and involved professionals. Sharing a meal created a relaxed setting and made it easier to start a a meaningful conversation&#8230; \t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper long\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column\">\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column text\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different topics were discussed between courses. The dinner revealed that many residents experience moving as stressful and emotional, feel they own too many things and would welcome practical support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After analysing the outcomes, CHANGENCY explored several possible creative interventions. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Aid for Moving House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emerged as the most promising concept. A ring binder was chosen because its contents can easily be updated or adapted. The folder was tested with residents during home visits and subsequently at a large residents\u2019 meeting in Amsterdam New-West.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on their feedback, the prototype was refined. They found the steps clear and helpful, appreciated the practical tips and local addresses, and were enthusiastic about the design and plain language\u2026 \r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-wrapper long\">\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column\">\r\n\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<div class=\"gb-grid-column text\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<p>More importantly, residents felt seen and understood during a period that is often stressful and emotionally charged,<\/p>\n<p><strong>From prototype to roll-out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project resulted in a scalable concept that combines a standard format with locally relevant information. This means the folder can be adapted relatively easily for other neighbourhoods and municipalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Aid for Moving House<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrates that circular behavioural change does not begin with a general awareness campaign, but with removing the practical barriers that make disposal the default option. By responding to what people need at a pivotal moment in their lives, throwing away less and making more conscious choices become the most attractive options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Update:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the summer of 2026, a pilot will begin in Amsterdam New-West involving 60 residents who are due to move.
